About Us
In 1955 the formation of the Australian Lawn Tennis Umpires Association occurred at a meeting of States representatives at the Australian Open. This continued through the 1960’s ,1970’s & 1980’s with delegates from each State meeting during the Australian Open at the Annual Conference .
With the move away from grass courts to MelbournePark and other major tournaments around Australia, it was the general opinion of delegates and Tennis Australia that ALTUA was not an appropriate name for umpires. At the 1993 conference, it was decided to change the name to Tennis Umpires Australia so in 1994 the change was made and this followed in all States. This continued until 2004 when it was decided that all officials (including Referee’s) should be brought under the umbrella of the National body and the name changed to the current name of Tennis Officials Australia. This still involved delegates from each State meeting during the Australian Open and electing an Executive. To become a more professional body, the moves were put in place to phase out delegates electing the executive and for members to elect a Board of Directors. The elections took place in December 2006 and the first 6 Directors were ratified at the 1st AGM in January 2007 and operate a National Vision for the benefit of all Tennis Officials in Australia.
Tennis Officials Australia is also responsible for negotiating all agreements for officials at major events like the Australian Open , AO Series events , Pro- Circuit futures events and National Junior events. TOA also assists its State Divisions with any negotiations with their Member Associations.
Tennis Officials Australia is moving forward with a new vision and goals. The new Board of Directors are focusing their strategy in the key areas of Marketing, Performance, Technical with support from Finance and Operations to make it all happen. The objects of TOA are displayed here.
It is an exciting time within Tennis Officials Australia and we are working hard to make our Officials the best officiating group possible.
